Objective: Describe glycolysis

glycolysis: (step 1 of cellular respiration)
Where? in cytosol of cell
What? glucose yields: 2 pyruvic acid molecules (each with 3C)

CO2
2 ATP only
4 energietic electrons/H atoms (two pairs) carried by NAD

anaerobic: can proceed with O2

If insufficient O2 is present, lactic acid is formed from both pyruvic acid molecules.

If sufficient O2 is present, an acetyl group (2 carbons) is formed from each pyruvic acid molecule.

Each acetyl group is picked up by coenzyme A (CoA) to form acetyl coenzyme A.
