Objective: Define the following terms:
| Oxidation: |
Removal of an electron during a chemical reaction. Since
most biological oxidations also involve loss of hydrogen, these
reactions are also called dehydrogenation reactions. After oxidation, a
molecule contains less energy. |
| Reduction: |
Gain of an electron (or gain of hydrogen) during a
chemical reaction. After reduction, a molecule contains more energy. |
| Whenever an oxidation occurs, a reduction
must also occur...this pair of oxidation/reduction reactions is called a
redox reaction. |
| Phosphorylation: |
the addition of a phosphate group, as indicated by the
following: ADP + phos. Gp + energy ---> ATP. The high-energy bond
attaching the third phosphate group stores the energy. |
