Enhanced,
Hybrid, Online
One of the
charges for the
eLearning Vista
Implementation
Project (VIP)
workstream
committee was to
define
“Face-to-face”,
“Hybrid/Technology-Enhanced”,
and “Online” in
regards to these
types of courses
using the
institution
supported course
management
system. This
document
represents our
recommend in
response to this
charge. |

FACE-TO-FACE |
 |
A course that meets
(is based)
exclusively in a
brick-and-mortar
classroom
(face-to-face) but
the instructor
supplements
face-to-face
classroom
instruction with
valuable online
resources supported
by the institution
course management
system or the Web,
such as grade book,
syllabus, assignment
submission, etc.
Face-to-Face
courses have all
(100%) of the
content
delivered/taught
face-to-face and
none (0%) of the
content
delivered/taught on
the Web.
|
|
Example: a 3
credit hour course
meets face-to-face
for all 3 contact
hours each week but
students use online
resources outside of
class. |
|
|
|
HYBRID/TECHNOLOGY
ENHANCED |
 |
A course that meets
(is based) partially
in a
brick-and-mortar
classroom
(face-to-face) and
partially in the
institution
supported course
management system.
The Web delivered
components meet the
same Standards of
Good Practice used
for online courses
and significantly
impact learning
while reducing the
amount of classroom
time.
Hybrid/Technology-Enhanced
courses have a
portion (30-70%) of
the content
delivered/taught in
the institution
supported course
management system
and a portion
(30-70%) of the
content
delivered/taught
face-to-face. The
percentage of the
course content
delivered/taught in
the institution
supported course
management system
and face-to-face for
a
hybrid/technology-enhanced
course could be
30/70 to 70/30 or
some other split
that suites the
course or meets
departmental policy.
|
|
Example: a 3
credit hour course
meets face-to-face
for 2 contact hours
and then requires
students to engage
in 1 contact hour
worth of instructor
facilitated Web
based instruction
and activities that
are supported by the
institution course
management system.
|
|
|
|
ONLINE |
 |
A course that meets
(is based)
exclusively in the
institution
supported course
management system
where students
access instructions,
instructor’s office,
all course materials
(lectures,
assignments,
resources, etc.) and
communicate via
email, discussions,
and/or chats with
the instructor and
other students.
Online courses have
all (100%) of the
content
delivered/taught in
the institution
supported course
management system.
Face-to-face
meetings (such as an
orientation or exam
reviews) are only
held if they
appeared in the
registration class
schedule.
|
|
Example: a 3
credit hour course
has 3 contact hours
worth of institution
supported course
management system
based instruction
and activities
facilitated by the
instructor each
week. |
