| This outline is intended to help you study this material in
the most effective manner. Please follow the sequence shown below. The first
session in this BASICS class covers a great deal of information and can be quite
intimidating. Hang in there. It does get better. And let me know if you
need additional information. Thanks. Read
Chapters 1 and 2 in the textbook, Introduction to Materials Management, by Tony
Arnold.
Read the instructor's notes for Session 1 in the participant
workbook. These notes match the session objectives that are found on the first page
of each session. These notes will give you an overview of the material you will read
in the session.
Read Session 1 in the Participant Guide, fill in the blanks, and complete the
problems found there. These problems are not part of your grade but will help you prepare
for the homework assignments and quizzes. If you have any questions regarding the
material, first review the Arnold text.
Workbook problem 1.1 on page 1-41 will be unique for each
person in this class. From your organization chart notice how many levels or people
are between the operator on the floor, or the material planner, and the decision
makers. Also, notice how many people and levels are involved when decisions cross
operational boundaries. Silo management is a term that is used to describe the
inability of people solving a problem being able to work directly together. Think
about problems you encounter in your business because of the organization chart layout.
Terms
Open the Terms. I suggest you find, write down, and commit to
memory definitions to the terms for Session One. To just memorize APICS definitions will
help but you must be able to understand how the words fit into the underlying concepts and
supply chain process. Bottom line is that you must be able to define them according to
APICS definitions and not necessarily to your current companys use of terms.
Performance Check in the Participant Guide..
Take the Performance Check in the Participant Guide
via Chitester. This can be taken now and again when you are reviewing to take the Midterm
Exam and Final Exam. While this Performance Check will not be counted toward your grade,
it will be an excellent review and provide you instant feedback for areas to study if you
miss any questions. Take the Performance
Check for Session 1.
Quiz 1
Before taking Quiz 1 be sure that you:
Read Session 1 in the Participant Guide and
Chapters 1 and 2 in the textbook.
Review the instructor notes for Session 1.
Complete the Problems in the Participant Guide and
try some of the Problems in Chapter 1 of the Textbook.
Know the definitions to the Terms for Session 1.
Take the Performance Check for Session 1.
I would like to share with you some tips for taking
Quizzes, the Midterm and Final Exam for this course. These ideas will also help you if you
plan to take the APICS Certification Examinations.
The tests will be multiple choice.
Make sure you read the question and all answers and
make a tentative selection
Dont pick the first "good" answer.
Select the BEST answer
Reread the question and answers to confirm you
selection
Every question has four answer choices. Two are
usually throwaways, one is almost right and one is best. You want the best answer.
Sometimes, you must pick the "least obnoxious answer."
On Roman numeral questions, review I, II, III, and
IV statements and select the "true" responses. Mark them and then pick a, b, c,
or d based on the answers you picked. If there isnt an answer that matches your
selection, attack the problem logically.
APICS likes answers that suggest empowerment,
information sharing, speed, flexibility, feedback, partnerships, JIT, quality, etc.
Almost always avoid answers with NEVER, MUST, or
ALWAYS
Watch out for EXCEPT or NOT in the question
Dont overlook the obvious answer
